MoMA Design Store Announces Strategic Japan Expansion: Kyushu Debut in Fukuoka and Relocation Kyoto Flagship in 2026
Feb 26, 2026

TOKYO, JAPAN - The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Design Store announces a significant expansion of MoMA Design Store in Japan. This expansion features two milestones: the grand opening of the first-ever Kyushu location in Fukuoka on April 3, 2026, and the revitalized relocation of the Kyoto store to the Takashimaya S.C. "T8" this fall.

Kyushu's First MoMA Design Store Fukuoka:

Opening on the first anniversary of the landmark One Fukuoka Building (the "One Building"), the new Fukuoka location represents a synergy between redevelopment and the art and ideas of our time. As a central hub for Asia, Fukuoka provides the ideal backdrop for MoMA Design Store's mission to bring "Good Design" into everyday life.

Located within the "Tenjin Big Bang" redevelopment zone, the store aligns with the "Creative Crossroads" concept of the One Building-a space where people, objects, and information intersect to spark new discovery.

The Fukuoka location features an interior designed by Japanese firm Moment Co., Ltd. The design offers a contemporary interpretation of Japanese architectural philosophy, incorporating local materials from Fukuoka and across Japan. This creates a unique spatial experience that bridges traditional Japanese aesthetics with the innovative spirit of The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The Next Chapter for Kyoto:

After successfully serving the community at Mina Kyoto since 2017, MoMA Design Store Kyoto will transition to a new location. Following its closure on February 28, 2026, the store will reopen in Fall 2026 on the second floor of Takashimaya S.C. "T8." This move ensures that MoMA Design Store remains a fixture in Japan's cultural capital, meeting the demand from both local residents and international tourists.

The MoMA Design Store Difference:

Every product at MoMA Design Store is reviewed and approved by the curators at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City. From icons of design to innovative products you didn't know you needed, every product at MoMA Design Store is carefully selected.

"MoMA Design Store's presence in Japan plays an important role in extending the Museum's reach and mission," said Jesse Goldstine, Chief Retail Officer at The Museum of Modern Art. "The openings in Fukuoka and Kyoto allow us to connect new audiences across Japan to good design through everyday experiences."

MoMA Design Store works closely with artists, designers, and makers across the globe, seeking objects that meet MoMA's criteria. Every purchase supports the Museum's exhibitions, artwork conservation and educational programs.
