Starting Thursday, February 19, the MoMA Design Store is launching a special pop-up event at its Omotesando location and online store to celebrate artist Tadanori Yokoo's 90th birthday. This curated collection is bringing Yokoo's distinctive color language and playful artistic world into everyday life, allowing each design piece to express its artistic charm in daily settings. In addition, Yokoo-themed items are being offered at the Shinsaibashi store and selected LOFT locations (Shibuya, Ginza, Ikebukuro) as part of the concurrent "Japanese Artist" feature. MoMA is inviting you to experience firsthand the remarkable appeal of an artist who has inspired generations of creators.

About Tadanori Yokoo

Born in 1936, Tadanori Yokoo is a renowned Japanese graphic designer, illustrator, printmaker, and painter whose extensive works are collected by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. In the 1960s, he rose to prominence within Tokyo's avant-garde art scene with his psychedelic and fantastical poster designs, which quickly gained widespread attention. Based at the Sōgetsu Art Center, he collaborated closely with artists such as Shūji Terayama, Tatsumi Hijikata, and Jūrō Kara, engaging actively in stage arts, poetry book design, and experimental animation. His groundbreaking expressions, which transcend the boundaries between art and design, continue to be highly regarded in Japan and throughout the international art community.

The "Eye and Mouth" series draws inspiration from the poster designs created by Tadanori Yokoo for the 1968 exhibition at MoMA, Word and Image: Posters and Typography from the Graphic Design Collection of the Museum of Modern Art, 1879-1967. The design interprets the "Image" through an eye motif and the "Word" in the exhibition title through a mouth motif. Through bold and intuitive visual expression, it masterfully portrays the symbiotic relationship between image and word.
